SUMMARY:TBA Series Chapter 1
DESCRIPTION:TBA is a concert series featuring lineups of unannounced performers representing the diversity of Toronto\, and beyond\, free from any hype or headliner. Transcending genre and encouraging collaboration\, the Series cuts through descriptors to get to the heart of what matters: Great live music. \nRather than focus on who’s playing\, or what ‘kind’ of music to expect\, audiences need only open their ears and minds to a musical journey that will pay off with an unbiased\, up-close-and-personal experience of live music in cozy confines. \nParticipating artists will be asked to find a point of collaboration that drives home our interconnectedness\, and the power of music to transcend boundaries. \nChapter 1 opens the Series at the future site of Revel Park\, the soul of Vaughan Metropolitan Centre\, where a former retail space has been transformed to the perfect venue for a focused experience of the power of music to engage\, enlighten\, and entertain. \nThree artists will perform\, and collaborate\, for an intimate audience. \nIn our endeavour to make events accessible to all\, ticket prices range from $0-50. We ask that you spend in proportion to your capacity to do so. All funds received make current and future programming possible. \nDoors open at 3.30 and the show runs from 4-630pm. There will be a CASH bar. \nRevel Park is located by Vaughan Metropolitan Centre\, the TTC’s newest\, and north-est\, subway stop (Line 1)\, at Highway 400 and Highway 7. Should you drive\, there is ample parking. \nLimited seats will be available for those requiring chairs; there are no stairs into or in the venue. \nThis Chapter of the TBA Series is presented in partnership with Small World Music Society and the Canada-China Cultural Development Association. \nWe acknowledge the financial support of The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent On Recordings (FACTOR) and Canada’s private radio broadcasters. \nWe also gratefully acknowledge the support of SOCAN Foundation – Fondation SOCAN \nPoster design Javo Huerta \nPhoto credits: Natalia Paklikowska (https://www.facebook.com/natalia.paklikowska)\, jwcampbell\, and courtesy of Downtown Yonge BIA \nPlease contact us with any questions: info@good-kind.com.

SUMMARY:Cannupa Hanska Luger: Every One & Kali Spitzer: Sister
DESCRIPTION:The crisis surrounding murdered and missing Indigenous women\, girls\, trans\, and queer community members continues\, with thousands of documented cases in both Canada and the U.S. \nThe Gardiner presents the Canadian premiere of artist Cannupa Hanska Luger’s Every One\, a monumental social sculpture commemorating victims of the crisis. Every One visualizes the data behind the MMIWQT crisis\, transforming large and abstract numbers into a representation of individual lived experiences. Responding to data collected by the Native Women’s Association of Canada\, Luger created a call to action video shared through social media that invited communities across the United States and Canada to make 2-inch clay beads\, each one representing a unique person who has been lost. Hundreds of participants held workshops\, both with Luger and on their own\, making the beads in studios\, community centres\, universities\, and private homes. These experiences generated over 4\,000 beads\, as well as numerous conversations\, stories\, and occasions for healing through clay. \nEvery One references and stands in solidarity with the photograph Sister by Kali Spitzer. Spitzer explores the individual stories behind the MMIWQT crisis through portraiture and self-representation. She works in the medium of tintypes\, a photographic process popular in the 1860s and 1870s\, particularly with settlers in the Canadian and American West. Spitzer reclaims this process\, adapting it to create images of contemporary Indigenous survivance. \nTogether\, Every One and Sister encourage us to recognize and honour the stories embedded in the MMIWQT crisis\, and to contemplate our own responsibilities and relationships to it.

SUMMARY:Luminato Festival: Maada'ookii Songlines
DESCRIPTION:A massive choral event with 200 singers from 8 diverse choirs\, 4 soloists\, and an Indigenous ensemble braiding their songs\, styles\, voices and cultures\, set against Toronto’s breathtaking waterfront. \nStand by the water and close your eyes; listen. Is there a drum-like pulse in the sound of the city? A single voice raising its melody to the stars? Or a noisy fury blaring out a cacophony of frustrations and dreams? \nMaada’ookii Songlines features 200 voices from 8 diverse choirs\, 4 soloists and a fusion Indigenous musical ensemble in a new massive choral experience composed by Luminato veteran\, Juno Award-nominated cris derksen. As the sun descends and this free outdoor massive choral event begins\, the city will be enveloped in sound coming from the land\, water and from above. A soundtrack for the city\, the performance comes with a powerful history and a promise: “as long as the sun shines; as long as the waters flow downhill; and as long as the grass is green.” \nMaada’ookii is an Ojibway word\, with several slightly different meanings. It is a genderless word. He/she distributes something; he/she gifts something; he/she shares something with others. Songlines in cross-Indigenous tradition are songs that help to find the way. \nMaada’ookii Songlines is a reminder that whatever our backgrounds may be\, we all come from the stars. \n  \n\n  \n \nCris Derkson\nA rising star on the Canadian world / classical / folk / electronica scenes\, award-winning Aboriginal cellist Cris Derksen is known for building layers of sound into captivating performances. Her music braids the traditional and contemporary in multiple dimensions\, weaving her traditional classical training and her aboriginal ancestry with new school electronics\, creating genre defying music. \n  \n\n  \nPresented by TD Canada Trust. \n \nSupported by the Government of Ontario and Canada Council for the Arts.
