SUMMARY:Luminato Festival: Maada'ookii Songlines
DESCRIPTION:A massive choral event with 200 singers from 8 diverse choirs\, 4 soloists\, and an Indigenous ensemble braiding their songs\, styles\, voices and cultures\, set against Toronto’s breathtaking waterfront. \nStand by the water and close your eyes; listen. Is there a drum-like pulse in the sound of the city? A single voice raising its melody to the stars? Or a noisy fury blaring out a cacophony of frustrations and dreams? \nMaada’ookii Songlines features 200 voices from 8 diverse choirs\, 4 soloists and a fusion Indigenous musical ensemble in a new massive choral experience composed by Luminato veteran\, Juno Award-nominated cris derksen. As the sun descends and this free outdoor massive choral event begins\, the city will be enveloped in sound coming from the land\, water and from above. A soundtrack for the city\, the performance comes with a powerful history and a promise: “as long as the sun shines; as long as the waters flow downhill; and as long as the grass is green.” \nMaada’ookii is an Ojibway word\, with several slightly different meanings. It is a genderless word. He/she distributes something; he/she gifts something; he/she shares something with others. Songlines in cross-Indigenous tradition are songs that help to find the way. \nMaada’ookii Songlines is a reminder that whatever our backgrounds may be\, we all come from the stars. \n  \n\n  \n \nCris Derkson\nA rising star on the Canadian world / classical / folk / electronica scenes\, award-winning Aboriginal cellist Cris Derksen is known for building layers of sound into captivating performances. Her music braids the traditional and contemporary in multiple dimensions\, weaving her traditional classical training and her aboriginal ancestry with new school electronics\, creating genre defying music. \n  \n\n  \nPresented by TD Canada Trust. \n \nSupported by the Government of Ontario and Canada Council for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Lisa Jackson in Conversation with Mathew Borrett
DESCRIPTION:For ‘Biidaaban: First Light’\, Lisa Jackson joined forces with 3D artist Mathew Borrett to create an interactive virtual reality experience that pictures a future Toronto overgrown by nature. Intertwining scenes of the city’s downtown core overtaken by plant life with spoken and written text of the Wendat\, Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) and Anishinaabe (Ojibway)\, ‘Biidaaban: First Light’ is a work of Indigenous futurism that creates a world where languages and vegetation thrive. \nJoin Jackson and Borrett for a conversation that delves into the process of making this extraordinary work. \nAbout Lisa Jackson:\nLisa Jackson is a cross-genre filmmaker whose works have screened at Hotdocs\, Tribeca\, SXSW\, Berlinale and London BFI\, and aired on many networks in Canada. Her work has garnered many awards including a Genie and Canadian Screen Award and Playback Magazine named her one of Ten to Watch. She is Anishinaabe\, lives in Toronto\, and her recent projects include the internationally acclaimed VR Biidaaban: First Light and the short IMAX 3D film Lichen. Along with a large-scale immersive installation Transmissions\, on the power of Indigenous languages\, she is also working on more traditional film and TV projects. See more at lisajackson.ca \nAbout Mathew Borrett:\nMathew Borrett is an artist living and working in Toronto. He has worked as an illustrator\, and as an environment/concept artist in the film and TV industry. This program is presented in partnership with the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective (ACC/CCA). \nImage courtesy of Mathew Borrett

SUMMARY:Storytelling\, Community\, Indigenous Art & Knowledge Sharing
DESCRIPTION:Presented by MUSE Arts and One Land\, One People who are honoured to work in solidarity with Indigenous artist Isaac Murdoch! Read bio below: \n“My name is Bomgiizhik (Revolving Sky) and am from Serpent River First Nation. I am fish clan and live in a small Ansihinabek Village called Nimkii Aazhibikoong.\nHaving spent many years active in securing indigenous rights for our future generations in the north\, I felt a strong need to help our relatives in the south achieve the same equality and human rights that we are striving for. We are connected and have strong ties. \nThere is a prophecy of when the condor meets the eagle. They say this has happened already and are in a time of great change. They say Indigenous ppl will rise up and help protect the planet in a time of great sorrow. I believe this is our calling. \nWe all come from these lands and are in solidarity. \nOne Land\, One People “ \nIsaac Murdoch \nAny donation you give during this event \,will support the work done by Muse Arts and One Land One People. You can donate at the door. *
